DSG Gearbox Oil Change and Servicing

DSG dual-clutch gearboxes are popular on VAG group vehicles under the names DSG (Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda), S-Tronic (Audi) and PDK (Porsche). They combine the advantages of a manual gearbox, notably robustness and reliability, with the driving comfort of an automatic gearbox, all with lightning-fast gear changes. They are fitted to small city cars as well as sports cars such as the Porsche 911 and Audi R8. They can reach high mileages without major problems, but to do so it is important to follow a rigorous maintenance schedule with regular oil changes. Here's why!
DSG 6 and DSG 7 dual-clutch gearboxes, fitted with oil-bath clutches, require regular attention. Wear particles from the clutches and various impurities build up in the oil over time. To guarantee optimal operation, an oil change together with replacement of the filter is recommended every 60’000 km. However, if the vehicle is mainly used in town, where the demands are more intense, it is preferable to reduce this interval to 45’000 or even 50’000 km.
This maintenance operation preserves the life of the clutches and also of the mechatronic unit, the electronic and hydraulic heart of the gearbox. Once the oil change has been carried out, the clutches need to be calibrated. This step prevents jerks during gear changes and restores the original smoothness of driving.
Within the VAG group, however, not all DSG gearboxes are in the same boat. The dry 7-speed DSG (reference DQ200), often fitted to 1.2, 1.4 or 1.8 TSI engines producing less than 250 Nm of torque, does not use oil to lubricate the clutches. In this case, a mechatronic oil change is not necessary except in special cases, and only the gear section requires an oil change approximately every 100’000 km.
