One set, all year round

An all-season tyre pairs a compound that stays supple in the cold with a tread stiff enough for warm days. It suits you if you mostly drive in town and on flat roads, under 15,000 km a year. Almost all our all-season tyres carry the alpine 3PMSF symbol, so they count as winter tyres, in Germany and France too. Our guide sets out their strengths and limits compared with summer and winter tyres.

Choosing the right all-season tyres

All-season tyres: who are they for?

An all-season tyre combines a compound that stays supple in the cold with a tread stiff enough for warmer days. It suits you if you mainly drive in town and on flat terrain, as in Geneva or on the Swiss Plateau, cover fewer than 15,000 km a year and can leave the car at home on days of heavy snow.

You save two wheel changes a year and the storage of a second set.

Its limits compared with summer and winter tyres

An all-season tyre is still a compromise. In summer, it takes slightly longer to stop and wears faster than a summer tyre, especially in very hot weather and with dynamic driving. In winter, it grips less well than a winter tyre on deep snow and uphill.

If you regularly drive up to ski resorts, drive long distances or drive a powerful car, two dedicated sets, summer and winter, remain the best choice.

Check for the 3PMSF alpine symbol

Choose an all-season tyre marked with the alpine symbol (a snowflake inside a three-peaked mountain): it certifies a traction test on snow and means the tyre is recognised as a winter tyre, including in Germany and France (loi Montagne), where the M+S marking alone is no longer enough.

Almost all the all-season tyres we have in stock carry it: 99 %.

Wear and wheel rotation

Fitted all year round, an all-season tyre wears continuously. Have the front and rear wheels swapped roughly every 10,000 km to even out wear, and keep an eye on the tread depth: 1.6 mm is the legal minimum, but replacing the tyres at around 4 mm keeps them effective on snow.

As with any tyre, check the pressure once a month, when cold, using the values shown on the door pillar or the fuel filler flap.

Reading a tyre size

The size is shown on the sidewall of your current tyres and in the vehicle documents. Example: 205/55 R16 91V

  • 205: width in millimetres;
  • 55: sidewall height, as a percentage of the width;
  • R: radial construction;
  • 16: rim diameter, in inches;
  • 91: load index, here 615 kg per tyre;
  • V: speed rating, here 240 km/h.

Tempted by another size? Our tyre size calculator shows sizes with the same diameter and how much they differ.

Frequently asked questions

Is an all-season tyre as good as a winter tyre?

On cold, wet roads, the best ones come close. On deep snow and uphill, a winter tyre is still better: if you often drive in the mountains, go for two sets.

Do all-season tyres count as winter tyres?

Yes, if they carry the 3PMSF alpine symbol, including in Germany and France. The M+S marking alone is no longer enough in those countries.

How long does an all-season tyre last?

It depends on the model, the car and your driving. As it runs all year round, it wears faster than two alternating sets: rotate the wheels roughly every 10,000 km and replace the tyres at around 4 mm of tread.

Who is the all-season tyre ideal for?

For drivers who mainly drive in town and on flat terrain, cover fewer than 15,000 km a year and can avoid days of heavy snow.

Do you need to change all four tyres at the same time?

It is ideal for consistent handling, and often essential on a four-wheel-drive car. Otherwise, change them at least one axle at a time and fit the newest tyres at the rear.
