Why winter tyres?
Below 7 °C, the compound of a summer tyre hardens and loses grip, even on a dry road. That of a winter tyre, rich in silica, stays supple in the cold. Its many sipes open up on contact with snow and ice and act as so many biting edges, while its deep grooves clear away slush.
On a snow-covered road, a car on winter tyres stops in a much shorter distance and pulls away where a car on summer tyres spins its wheels.
