Tyres by size

Why winter tyres

Below 7 °C, a winter tyre's compound stays supple and its sipes bite into snow and ice: the car stops shorter and pulls away where a summer tyre spins. Almost all our winter tyres carry the alpine 3PMSF symbol, the benchmark in Germany and France. Compare our best sellers, shop by brand or by size, and find the essentials in our guide: rules in Switzerland, 3PMSF or M+S, tread depth.

Choosing the right winter tyres

Why winter tyres?

Below 7 °C, the compound of a summer tyre hardens and loses grip, even on a dry road. That of a winter tyre, rich in silica, stays supple in the cold. Its many sipes open up on contact with snow and ice and act as so many biting edges, while its deep grooves clear away slush.

On a snow-covered road, a car on winter tyres stops in a much shorter distance and pulls away where a car on summer tyres spins its wheels.

Are winter tyres compulsory in Switzerland?

No: Switzerland does not require winter tyres. The law does, however, require your vehicle to be fit to drive safely in the road conditions. If you have an accident in the snow on summer tyres, you may be held liable and your insurer may reduce its payout.

Our neighbours have stricter rules: Germany, Austria, Italy and France (loi Montagne) require winter tyres or snow chains depending on the region, the time of year or the weather. In Germany and France, only tyres bearing the 3PMSF alpine symbol now count as winter tyres: bear this in mind before going skiing abroad.

3PMSF alpine symbol or M+S?

The M+S marking (Mud and Snow) is simply a manufacturer's declaration, with no mandatory test. The alpine symbol (a snowflake inside a three-peaked mountain, known as 3PMSF), by contrast, certifies that the tyre has passed a standardised traction test on snow.

So choose a tyre that carries the alpine symbol: 97 % of the winter tyres we have in stock do. Some models also show an ice pictogram, reserved for Nordic tyres designed for icy roads, which are less at ease on wet or dry roads.

Tread depth, age and speed rating

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, but a winter tyre loses most of its effectiveness on snow below 4 mm: that is the replacement threshold recommended by the TCS. The compound also hardens with age; after six to eight years, it is better to replace the tyre even if the tread is still sufficient.

A winter tyre may have a lower speed rating than the one entered in the vehicle registration document: in that case, a sticker showing the maximum speed must be placed in the driver's field of vision.

Reading a tyre size

The size is shown on the sidewall of your current tyres and in the vehicle documents. Example: 205/55 R16 91V

  • 205: width in millimetres;
  • 55: sidewall height, as a percentage of the width;
  • R: radial construction;
  • 16: rim diameter, in inches;
  • 91: load index, here 615 kg per tyre;
  • V: speed rating, here 240 km/h.

Frequently asked questions

Are winter tyres compulsory in Switzerland?

No, but the vehicle must be suited to the road conditions. If you have an accident in the snow on summer tyres, you may be held liable and your insurer may reduce its payout.

When should you fit winter tyres?

Once temperatures drop below 7 °C for good, usually in October. The “O to O” rule: from October to Easter.

What is the difference between M+S and the alpine symbol?

M+S is a manufacturer's declaration, with no test. The 3PMSF alpine symbol certifies a traction test on snow; in Germany and France, only tyres that carry it count as winter tyres.

What is the minimum tread depth for a winter tyre?

1.6 mm by law, but the TCS recommends replacing it from 4 mm: below that, its effectiveness on snow drops sharply.

Do you need to change all four tyres at the same time?

It is ideal for consistent handling, and often essential on a four-wheel-drive car. Otherwise, change them at least one axle at a time and fit the newest tyres at the rear.
